From The One Percent Club Coaches

Christmas is over and it’s the start of another year, which means many people will have decided that 2024 is the year they will FINALLY get in shape, lose weight and priorities their health.

However it is also the time than many people will approach this in completely the wrong way, not lose weight and end up in the same position next January. In fact probably in a worst position, as studies show that weight gain is seasonal, and people put the majority of their weight on over the xmas period each year, without losing all that they gained from the Christmas before.

But The One Percent Club is here to make sure that this doesn't happen. Here are 5 of the biggest fatloss mistakes to avoid this year, and what to do instead to ensure you set yourself up for success.

1.Blaming certain foods for making you ‘Fat’

We hear it all the time, that it’s the bread, or the avocado, or the potatoes that are making people overweight! But the truth is, it’s never one food or foods fault! No one food is to blame for a person being overweight, but instead, it is the total calories that someone consumes each day.

Remembering that being in a calorie deficit is key and not just avoiding and demonising certain foods will set you on the right path in 2024, if weight loss is the desired outcome. If you’re in a calorie deficit, you will lose weight, as you are using up more energy than you are taking in.

2.Thinking you will achieve your goal in weeks

You HAVE to be realistic. Those people who expect to reverse years of being out of shape in a matter of weeks are going to be very disappointed and probably give up. Making change is hard and weight loss occurs by consistently sticking to these changes. The sooner you accept that you have to play the long game when it comes to weight loss, the better.

3.Using exercise to burn off a poor diet

You can’t out train a bad diet! Fat loss will occur through successful management of your food and calories, whilst exercise is there to improve your strength, build muscle, improve mobility, increase fitness, build self confidence and improve your mood ( to name a few!).

Don’t fall in to the trap of using exercise to make up for all the food you’ve been eating. Trust us, this won’t work and builds a negative link to exercise. You will most likely also end up knackered from all the training you are doing and eventually burn out and give up.

4.Giving up when things aren’t perfect

There’s no escaping it, you will go off plan and things won’t be perfect when embarking on a weight loss journey. And that’s ok! If you approach it from a place of perfectionism, you will most likely fall into the trap of thinking you’re failing when something doesn’t go to plan, that it’s therefore pointless even trying, and just give up!

Remember that failing it just a way of learning how to do things better next time and is absolutely necessary for us to change and progress. It’s not about being perfect but about always looking to improve, learning from your mistakes and most importantly keeping going. You are the Tortoise in a weight loss journey, not the Hare. Keep going nice and steady and you’ll get there.

5.Following someone else’s plan

The thing that many people don’t realise is that nutrition and training plans when working with a coach ( if they are good at their job at least) are tailored to that individual. Coaches will take into consideration a whole host of things including how that individual moves, their current fitness level, their health metrics, their goal, their lifestyle, how active they are day to day and their current body composition. It’s no surprise then, that when you copy your friend Saul or Sarahs plan, it probably won’t work for you. If you’re serious about improving your health, losing weight and feeling, looking and moving your best, we couldn’t recommend having someone design and guide you through a tailored programme any more. Your chances of success will massively increase!

We hope you find this helpful and wish you all a successful, healthy, and goal hitting 2024!
